Ecuador's culture is a blend of many different cultures. There were many indigenous groups that lived in the area that is now known as Ecuador when the Spanish invaded in the 1500's A.D. The cultures of these groups have blended not only with each other, but also with the Spanish and other cultures that have come to the area (Culture in Ecuador, 2010).

Societal Expectations

"The Ecuadorians have a distinctive type of dress code. The men and especially the woman in each region of Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands can be easily identified by their dress as it is displays specific cultural diversities that are characteristic of that particular region. A major aspect of Indian identity is present in Ecuador. People that are familiar with the native dress can often tell roughly where an Indian is from, based on what they wear (Culture in Ecuador, 2010)."

In urban areas, literacy is very high. However, in rural areas, children do not always have access to schools in which instruction is taught in their native language. For this reason, literacy in rural areas is much lower. There is a strong push for better education in Ecuador, and education in urban areas is comparable to education in the United States (Education in Ecuador, 2010).
